Developmental Editing

Developmental editing focuses on the big picture of a text. It involves helping an author hone the argument, structure, and style of a piece of writing. It can occur at any point in the writing process, whether you’ve only got a basic idea or a full draft of an article, chapter, or book. When you get in touch, we will work to define our goals based on where you are in the process of writing. I will provide big-picture feedback in the form of a detailed editing letter that suggests changes to improve

  • Argument

  • Clarity

  • Flow

  • Engagement with research and sources

Substantive Editing

Substantive editing (also known as line editing) involves taking a closer look at the organization, structure, and mechanics of your piece (although it will not involve grammar and spelling and is not a copy edit). I will go line by line through your piece to make comments on matters of structure and style. The goal here is to ensure that the most interesting, sharpest version of your argument is conveyed in every sentence, paragraph, and section of your work. For this service my feedback will primarily be through marginal comments and the Track Changes function, although I will also provide an editing letter summarizing my changes.
